Slouchy T-Shirt

Nowadays, I dress for 3 things:

  1. Comfort

  2. Convenience

  3. Washable

Comfort:  outfits need to be comfortable because I don't know at what point during the day I can catch that 20 minute nap, and when I find it, I need to be sleep ready.

Convenience: while I am breastfeeding, I need a shirt that can easily be pulled up and down - this is a saving grace when the baby gets fussy, because it's not easy unlayering, or unbuttoning when you need to feed your screaming child

Washable: spit up, pee and poop are so frequent, what's the point in costly dry cleaning?

Keeping all these points in mind, I am currently vying for Rachel Pally's Slouchy Off the Shoulder T-Shirt found here. What's cute about this top is the off shoulder neckline and the uneven hem - this is such a sassy and unique tee.

Statement Necks

As my belly grew bigger, I often found that people (especially strangers) instantly looked at my belly, rather than my face. This sometimes made me feel a bit self-conscious, especially being pregnant for the first time. So...on those days when I wasn't feeling so great, and wanted people to focus on me rather than my widening body, I created a distraction by wearing huge statement necklaces.  That way, the eye is drawn to 'shiny pretty objects', and a closer range to my face :)

I loved Anthropologie's Stormy Sea Necklace ($48) - so much, that I have it in 3 different colors.  What's great about this necklace is that the knotted strands of jersey are adjustable, so it can sit high or below the neckline.  It's so versatile, it can be worn with fancy dresses, or dressed down with jeans and a tank top.

Fierce Mamas

Christian Siriano, winner of last year's Project Runway, has designed a line of maternity wear called Fierce Mamas - found at moodymamas.com, and let me be the first to say, it is beyond "fierce"!!! First off, all of his styles are utterly adorable and chic. Secondly, you don't need to feel guilty while shopping as the price points are within reason.

Christian has covered all of this Fall's latest & hottest trends. For instance, boyfriend flannel shirts are so hot right now, he has this buffalo plaid tunic in his assortment for $69:

Denim Leggings for $48.50

Navy colored knit jersey cowl neck dresses for $88:

One shoulder dresses are so hot right now!

Or, for a more bra-friendly look, the Sheer Rib Loose Dress ($32)

Love the Ballet

Jeffrey Campbell's ballet flats were the best shoes to dress my swollen and enlarged feet through out pregnancy.  His choice of fun colors and embellishments are a great way to complete your outfit - and still be comfortable at the same time.  Can be worn before, during and after maternity, I'd suggest buying a size up from your normal shoe size to make room for swelling and lee way for comfort. I normally wear a size 6 and wore a size 7 in his sizes.

I'm a bit obsessed with this shoe right now found on Singer22 the Haley Studded Bow:

Also, on sale at Nordstroms, there is another version of the Haley shoe:

Or, as an alternative, if bows aren't your thing, there is the 'Jeweled' flat, also found at Nordtroms:

Little Black Dress

If you need a black dress for an occasion or holiday party - Top Shop is a great destination to fulfill your need (thank you Jamie K.!) Unfortunately, the nearest Top Shop store is in Soho, so if you are ever in NYC, stop by their maternity section you will find some great stylish pieces there.  In the meantime, on their online store, I found two fabulous little black dresses priced around $100.

The first dress is great for that holiday work party - more conservative in feel and the flutter sleeves are great if you are feeling a bit conscious about any arm flub.

The second, is a more dressy option with a black bead trim around a plunging neckline. A great piece for any occasion or event where you want to feel chic

My Love for Sweaters: Chapter 1 (of many)

Fall is my favorite time of the year because of two obsessions, sweaters and boots. Often times, during the cool weather, you'll spot me in my uniform: a sweater tunic over leggings with boots (which, this was the outfit I gave birth in - no joke!) However, wearing a sweater when you are preggo can be a challenge because you don't want to throw on a bulky yarn sweater when you already feel bulky.  My solution to this is finding the right silhouette most flattering to a big belly.

On bluefly.com, they have the cutest Free People "Ruffle Me Up' sweater dress.  The cinched waist hits right below the belly and the ruffled peplum skirt is long enough to cover places you don't want accentuated.  In addition, it is light in weight so you get the look of fall with out the bulk.

Biker Chic

Rachel Zoe (one my many fashion muses - but I take her word like the fashion Bible) attested that this season's staple piece is  a cropped leather jacket.  Such an easy throw on cover-up that replaced last year's cardigan.  I adopted this 'biker chic' trend through out my 3rd trimester as the weather started to cool. I wore my leather motorcycle jacket over long maxi dresses or on top of a tee-shirt and leggings.  Gisele Bundchen also rocked this look during her pregnancy. Granted, she is an uber supermodel, anyone can have this look.

I got my moto jacket at H&M (pleather to get the look for less), but I found at Target, Liz Lange offers the same look and feel at a great price:

Sitting Pretty and Cute in PINK

A friend and fellow  haute momma, Cindy B., raved about Victoria's Secret PINK Foldover Yoga Pants. I dedicate this post to her and her precious baby boy Holden.

"I LOVE Victoria's Secret yoga pants. I bought a couple pairs one size up  and rock them all the time. They sit below the belly and are super comfy. I also think they look real cute because paired with a tank top they've showed the bump from when it started to be a bump (and don't cut it in half or any of the odd things my gym shorts seem to do)."  - Cindy

I personally tried these yoga pants myself and shared the same enthusiasm for them. They were super stretchy and thick, sucking your body in just the right places. Also, as I got bigger, the foldover band could be unfolded over my belly as extra support when I exercised. Inseams come in long, crop and for the vertically challenged short! Another reason to buy several? These pants retail for $35 and less!

SPANX Bra-llelujah

I struggled with finding a supportive yet comfortable bra that could be worn throughout my pregnancy.  I made the rookie mistake by going to Victoria's Secret and just sized up in cup and bra size in my favorite style. However, I found that my 'boobalines' outgrew my bra within weeks and caused major discomfort and restricted breathing (not to mention a huge waste of money).  After making this mistake twice, I did my research and found the SPANX Bra-llelujah Maternity Bra with no wire at destinationmaternity.com, and literally, it was a "bra-llelujah" experience. The SPANX brand is infamous for masking unwanted excess weight, which, in this instance, this bra eliminated my back rolls that I got when my bra got tighter . Made of nylon, this bra stretches as your chest measurements grow and the no wire and molded cup give you that extra comfort and support.  This bra survived with me through 2nd trimester growth spurts throughout the time where my milk came in post-partum, so Amen to SPANX!

Leggings + Belly Band = Sublime Comfort

Liz Lange for Target has combined two essentials for every growing belly: leggings and the belly band. Leggings are every woman's comfort alternative (pregnant or not), and now united with the belly band for that extra support, makes this style the ultimate pregnant bottom.  What is an additional appeal is the price that Target is offering: $24.99 for a pair of 2 in black and charcoal colors.

Lauren Moshi's Swing Tees

Lauren Moshi's Swing Tees are a great fix for your casual chic wear.  Worn over your favorite pair of leggings or denim, the A- line cut of these tee-shirts drape nicely over your growing bump. I wore various versions of this tee-shirt from pre-pregnancy to the day I was released from the hospital (and still to this day).  Lauren Moshi is also a celeb favorite as seen on Nicky Hilton, Vanessa Hudgens, and Lauren Conrad.  The designer's unique graphic prints and luxe cotton comes in various sleeve lengths from tank top to long sleeve.

Lauren Moshi can be found at singer22.com or shopmanhattanite.com

Time for some Hanky Panky

Body changes such as weight gain, widening hips, and butt growth are all unfortunate occurrences in pregnancy that can make a girl feel less sexy.  I certainly experienced this and recall having nightmares of my husband cheating on me (I researched this on babycenter - totally normal to have these type of dreams!).  What is a girl's quick fix to this? Fun and sexy panties! Hanky Panky panties are the best underwear to wear throughout pregnancy. Not only are they 'one size fits all' (always a conscience booster to not be reminded your body is growing) but they are so comfortable. The lace and low rise fit is definitely a good anecdote to embracing your sexiness!

Hanky Panky lingerie can be found on shopbop.com:

As a lesser-expensive alternative, since Hanky Panky can get pricey when you need coverage through out the week, I also bought Gap Body's low rise lacey thong. The look and feel is very close to Hanky Panky's at a lower retail!

J Brand Maternity Pencil Jeans

Of all the maternity jeans that I have purchased, the J Brand Maternity 12" Pencil Jeans are my UTMOST favorite. Found on shopbop.com, I found that these jeans were the most forgiving and I still felt fashionably chic. The best design detail about these jeans are the elastic gore insets on the sides. While other maternity jeans have an excessive band of fabric at the waist - the elastic gussets hug your body so you don't have that extra bulk lying at the waist side. Thus, it makes outfitting the top easier and you have the option to wear more fitted tops rather than tents.

The dark rinse wash and the fitted leg opening also make this a versatile pair of jeans - I wore these at work, weekend errands, and happy 'sober' hours.

Although they are on the pricier side, it is all worth the investment. I wore these throughout my 2nd & 3rd trimester. I suggest buying one size bigger than your pre-pregnancy size and keep in mind, there is a lot of elasterell stretch to these jeans so it grows with you!

Thank you for Smocking

Smocking is a fabulous design detail to have on tops, dresses and pants as your body starts growing up top and down bottom. The great thing about smocking is that it is a prettier form of elastic - so you can stretch into it! Smocked tops are also very supportive up top as we all know those 'boob-alines' (as Liv Tyler refers to them) grow and grow through out your pregnancy.

Here is a smocked dress that I wore throughout my second and third trimester - I found this at my fave fashionable / yet affordable boutique Anat B.

The Jean-ius Bella Band

The must-have that every pregnant fashionista should own for the first trimester is the Bella Band.  This is the best invention to maximize every moment  in those pre-pregnancy jeans! Using the Bella Band can help hoist that waistband with out having to button your jeans. The great thing about investing in a Bella Band is it can be used throughout your pregnancy as your belly grows.

As an alternative, for those early weeks where you just need an extra 2-3 inch extender on your waistband, you can also just loop a rubber band (I used a hair tie) looped through the button hole and wrapped around the button.
