Cinco de Mayo Drinks

It's only Tuesday, yet I'm ready to get through the work week and kick off the weekend, especially since it's Cinco de Mayo. This upcoming Mexican holiday is going to be special because 1) it falls on a Saturday where I'm left for Sunday recovery and 2) I'll be in town, which I haven't been in years. Typically I am in NYC for market - where sadly, New Yorkers don't really celebrate the holiday, nor do they have the best Mexican food.  So I feel obligated to fiesta!

So I have researched on pinterest various drink options, and narrowed my options down to two:

Allegedly the BEST Margarita recipe:
1 can limeade
1 can gold tequila
1/2 can water
1/2 can 7 up
1 Corona beer
Juice of 1 lime

Mix well over ice or blend with ice...

And for those smart enough to spare the hangover, a non-alchololic option:

  • 8 cups cubed seeded watermelon, (about 6 pounds with the rind), divided
  • 1 cup water, divided
  • 1/3 cup sugar, divided
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1 liter (4 cups) club soda, or seltzer water, well chilled
  • Lime slices, for garnish

Serve to friends and ole!

Mommy Monday: Agendas

The Type A in me gets satisfaction writing out to-do lists, and lately, I haven't felt so satisfied. In fact, I have been so overwhelmingly disorganized lately, I wish for a small sabbatical to get my life back on track.  Unfortunately, free time is nothing but a luxury nowadays.  So as an alternative, I am injecting my own agenda on the blog in hopes I can get results and check things off the list.  The headset behind this is if I see it, I'll do it...most are fun, some are work.

Coldplay concert:  Fun.  Parent fun sans kids.

Accessorizing:  Tired of sounding like the broken record when I complain about nothing to wear, and need to do a better job of reinventing outfits in my closet. Throwing on some jewels to a plain tee adds newness to my wardrobe.

Cinco de Mayo: Preparing for a small get together with co-workers

New Menus for Tyty: Getting more adventurous with the baby's food and now want to introduce meat concoctions this week.

Self Improvement:  This one is work. I saw this mentioned in the most recent Marie Claire about supermoms.  I have this problem of spazzing out when I see clutter and mess everywhere, and living with 3 boys, I spazz all the time.  Most of the weekend I am seen cleaning up rather than spending quality time with my family.  Something I am going to work on, and relinquish control.

Pretty at Home: Gold Accents

I have been searching high and low for the right prints to hang in our guest bathroom.  Something chic, sparkly, but not overtly feminine. I was inspired by this blog post on the Glitter Guide and was most excited about these metallic prints... 1) they are the right accents to inject in the bathroom, and quite fitting with a fashionable twist and 2) I have an infatuation for gold things.

I am particularly fond of the first two features (and don't be surprised when you walk into my bathroom!)

Mommy Monday: Crib Conversion

We are a home equipped with two cribs and have yet to convert Big D to the toddler bed.  It would have made the most economical sense to pass D's crib on to Little Tyty when he was born, however, we just couldn't.  The thought of a toddler roaming through the house late at night coupled with a sleepless newborn was frightening.  So we made the monetary sacrifice and bought a second crib for peace of mind.

Now here we are, at his 2 1/2 year mark and he's still kicking it in a crib, with no plans in sight to transition him.  So I ask, how long is too long before I make the switch?

Home Alone

DIY Face masks found here

On a rare occasion, I'll get an opportunity to indulge in some alone time.   This week the Hubs was away for business for a night and I had an endless list of guilty "to-do's" to accomplish.  I tend to come up with these outlandish lists under special circumstances and only when I am at home by myself.  To-do's that I am either ashamed to do in front of the Hubs, or afraid of the judgement that would be raised by him.

Below are some my guilty home alone pleasures. What are yours?

1.  Over analyze my skin, apply face masks
2.  Catch up on bad episodes of teeny bopper tv queued up on the dvr: 90210, Hart of Dixie, Pretty Little Liars to name a few.
3.  Browse and shop online for out of price luxuries
4.  Stalk friends on Facebook
5.  Go to bed early. I loooooove sleeping
6.  Try out new hair do's
7.  Eat cereal for dinner
8.  Eat candy for appetizers
9.  Organize. closets, calendars and emails
10.  Sculpt my toneless body with pathetic sit ups and push ups
11. Reminisce through old photos

Party Like a Rock Star!

The Hubs and I had a Saturday night outing sans kids, and we partied like rock stars, with rock stars.  The event was a silent auction for D's future preschool alma mater.  And to make the night even more memorable, we dressed for the occasion in 80's attire, representing Robert Palmer and his back up supermodel in the music video "Addicted To Love".  We drank, bid and danced the night away to live 80's rock performed by award winning Grammy artists.  It was a night reminiscent of young uninhibited drinking,  accompanied with a rude 6:30am awakening on Sunday.  A reminder from the 9 month of old of who and what we are nowadays - responsible parents.

Panic Monday: Kisses from Mom

I had a moment of panic when I saw this picture of D holding another girl's hand (as he points out her name is Althea as I type).  I am pretty sure the hand gesture was unintentional and purely innocent. However, it was a sad reminder of that day every mother of a son anticipates...when they are no longer the sole woman in his life.

Until the days young adolescent crushes ignite, girlfriends come and go, and eventually marriage ensues, I will continue to overwhelm them with affection and kiss my boys incessantly.  I am sure even before that special someone enters, I would have transitioned through the period where kisses from mom are so uncool and in exchange I'll get an eye roll for that smooch on the cheek.  Nonetheless, I will grow to accept and learn to share my sons' affections --  a fact of life.  Don't worry future wives, I vow not to be as domineering as Sex and the City's infamous mother in law, Bunny MacDougal.  But in the meantime, I can hope to slow the hands of time and hoard every unit of affection from D + T.

Style Crush: Olivia Palermo

I have been smitten with Olivia Palermo and her sense of style since debuting on the MTV reality show The City.  Since the show ended in 2008, the NYC socialite has been a budding style icon and is often seen as a front row spectator at many designer runways.  Known for her outfit transformations that range from affordable Zara fashion to designer Hermes accessories, her overall style epitomizes darling and feminine.  I'm also envious of her rad head of hair. More to come on that later.

Male Obsessions

As an inspiration to a DIY style look book I made for the Hubs featured here, a reader requested styling tips for dressing the man in her life. These are trends I've convinced my husband to either wear, or add to his future shopping list.

From top left:

7 for All Mankind Standard Fit Straight Leg Jeans:  The Hubs is very loyal to his bootleg jean.  His so-called giant thunder thighs were never to slip in a pair of straight leg denim.  Until I convinced him to try and Bloomingdales was coincidentally having a 25% off promotion.  These Sevens were the winners - and now he is the proud owner of three pairs.

Y3 High tops:  He has yet to make the purchase, but high tops are necessary for his current shoe arsenal.  Love that these are color blocked to add a modern twist.

American Apparel Cardigan:  I can't take away or get rid of the logo graphic tees that the Hubs owns.  Especially if he's handed free ones from work.  To hip up those Activision company tees, I have him layer it with this cardigan.  An affordable find that is soft and cozy.

Friendship Bracelets:  More hesitation from the Hubs.  A bracelet for guys?  To add guilt (or a plan to secretly put that bracelet on his wrist), I MADE a friendship bracelet for my husband last summer.  Sadly, it fell apart (perhaps a secret vendetta on his end) a few months later.  So as a replacement, I found these cheap finds from Urban Outfitters.  A more affordable option than the J crew Miansai options here.

Cargo Jackets:  I love a man in cargo jackets.  A utilitarian look to layer over shirtings or tee shirts.  A must have staple for every guy's closet.

Ray Ban Wayfarer:  A man who is confident to rock this pair looks instantly hip.

J crew Gingham Shirt:  From the Holiday look book, I bought a couple of gingham checkered shirts for the Hubs to layer under sweaters.  Love the pop in the spring colors for the season.  Also a great option to wear for Sunday brunch with the parents.

Easter Snaps

Hours of local wine drinking

Early morning egg hunt + giant baskets left from the Easter Bunny
Wagon riding around the neighborhood
The Easter weekend came and went at lightening speed.  We drove up to the Santa Barbara county to see family and close friends for a short, yet productive visit – and loved every minute of it. There's something heart warming and comfortable returning to my small home town.  Everyone is friendly and welcoming, the pace is go with the flow, and being surrounded by the people who love you no matter what gives me a sense of safety. These were definitely things I took advantage of while growing up, and have grown to appreciate as I grow older and live in such a big inconvenient city such as LA. It's also a big plus, now that I am at the legal age to drink, living minutes away from local wineries allows me to indulge in delicious local wineries.
